Novol 37211 Protect 340 Wash Primer (1L) – Acid-Etch Reactive Primer
For the ultimate foundation on bare metal, Novol Protect 340 is a professional-grade, two-component (2K) reactive wash primer. This 1-litre unit is engineered to provide exceptional anti-corrosive protection by chemically "etching" into the metal surface, creating a molecular bond that standard primers simply cannot match.
It is the industry-standard choice for aluminum, galvanized steel, and bare steel, ensuring that your paint system remains permanently bonded even in high-moisture environments.
Essential Mixing Information
This is a 2K system that requires a specific activator to function.
- Required Hardener: Novol H 5910 (Reactive Activator)
- Mixing Ratio: 1:1 (1 part Primer : 1 part Hardener)
- Note: Do not add any extra thinners. The 1:1 mix provides the perfect spraying viscosity.
Key Features & Benefits
- Active Chemical Etching: Contains phosphoric acid that "bites" into the metal, neutralizing microscopic oxidation and ensuring a superior mechanical key.
- Universal Substrate Adhesion: Outstanding performance on Aluminum, Galvanized Steel, Zinc-coated Steel, and Cold-Rolled Steel.
- Ultra-Thin Film: Designed to be applied in very thin layers, meaning it doesn't build up bulk or hide fine panel details.
- Superior Corrosion Resistance: Acts as a chemical barrier that stops "creep" rust if the topcoat is ever scratched or damaged.
- Fast Drying: Can be overcoated in as little as 10–15 minutes (wet-on-wet), significantly speeding up the restoration process.
Professional Application Strategy
Wash primers are specialized tools. To avoid chemical reactions, follow these rules:
- Preparation: Sand the bare metal with P120–P180 and degrease thoroughly with Novol Plus 780.
- Mixing: Mix the Primer and H 5910 Hardener in a clean cup. Stir well.
- Application: Apply 2 thin layers. The coating should look transparent/yellowish, not opaque.
- Flash-off: Wait 10–15 minutes until the surface is matte.
- The "Golden Rule": Never apply polyester putties (body fillers) directly over Wash Primer. The acid in the primer will prevent the putty from curing. You must apply an acrylic primer (like Protect 330) over the wash primer first if you need to do filling work.
Expert Insight: Wash Primer is the "secret weapon" for aluminum panels. Aluminum naturally forms an oxide layer that rejects paint; Protect 340 dissolves that layer and replaces it with a stable chemical bond.
