Employees at the American National Corvette Museum in Kentucky were left stunned and “in tears” yesterday morning, when a 40 foot wide and 30 foot deep sinkhole opened up and swallowed 8 Corvettes that had been on display in a domed indoor exhibit space. Motion detectors in the museum sounded alarms in the Skydome when the ground shifted at 5:44 a.m. according to a press release.
Eight cars dropped into the hole, six of which were owned by the museum and two by General Motors. According to executive director Wendell Strode emergency personnel allowed museum staff to remove one car, an irreplaceable 1983 Corvette which luckily had escaped.
The museum reported that the eight Corvettes that were affected by this incident were.
- 1993 ZR-1 Spyder on loan from General Motors.
- 2009 ZR1 "Blue Devil" on loan from General Motors.
The other six vehicles owned by the National Corvette Museum included:
- 1962 Black Corvette.
- 1984 PPG Pace Car.
- 1992 White 1 Millionth Corvette.
- 1993 Ruby Red 40th Anniversary Corvette.
- 2001 Mallett Hammer Z06 Corvette.
- 2009 White 1.5 Millionth Corvette.
